Session 11: Crispy Critters

Session report for February 22, 2024. Six players adventured for one day.

Characters

Bard the Stout, human fighter 3
Mustacha, human ranger 3
Argond, human ranger 1
Arrek, human fighter 1
Brother Flint, human monk 1
Censer, human cleric 1

Once again, the team made a plan to map out the first level of the dungeon.

now you know how this isn't going to go

Down the hall and around the corner they discovered a new passage that passed under the dungeon entrance. They skipped a side passage and checked out a door at the end of the hall.

A dozen orcs (who else?) came around the side passage and went the other way without noticing the party. The players took advantage of the surprise and charged their exposed rear.

Brother Flint showed off a new trick. First, he disarmed an orc with his ranseur during the surprise segment. Then, once the orc could not fend him off, he knocked it to the ground with an overbear attack. Finally, the 300-pound monk crushed the orc's skull under his foot.

The orcs panicked and took heavy casualties as they fled. Two orcs fled into the darkness and split at the first intersection they came to (this was determined by throw of the dice). One orc fled into a room full of piercers and met a hilarious fate. The other one lost the speedy Flint at an intersection.

The party regrouped and attempted to track the last orc. Mustacha and Argond picked up the trail and determined the orc ran down to level 2. Most of the party wanted to keep tracking the orc, over Argond's objection.

They followed the orc all the way back to The Orctagon on level 3. But they knew better than to enter the trap; instead they'd wait upstairs and ambush the orc's reinforcements.

That's right, the orc went back to the Orctagon by random chance. Trust the process!

Laughter echoed down a side passage. A horde of giant centipedes skittered at them from the darkness.

The party reacted well to the new situation. They covered half the floor in oil. A perfectly-placed torch ignited the oil and crisped up half the centipedes!

They lost initiative on the following round, but their armor held up - almost. Poor Censer was bitten by a centipede (18+ required to hit) and succumbed to the venom (6 or better on 1d20 to live). They squashed the remaining centipedes after that.

What does centipede venom do? The Monster Manual entry says it is not fatal. We had the same question about centipede poison in our last Machodor session. We determined that monster poison is always fatal and the MM text is there to explain the +4 bonus to the saving throw.

Time was short - we got a late start and the mapping was slow - so the players returned to the dead orcs, looted, and returned home. They tried to find a cure for Censer's condition but it was too late to save him.

THE VANQUISHED
10 orcs, ambushed and slaughtered!
13 giant centipedes, burnt to a crisp!
Censer, level 1 cleric. Died to centipede poison.
